This study was carried out to determine the presence of dermatophytes and the skin mycoflora from animals in Dalseong park (D) of Daegu, Seoul grand park (S) of Seoul and Everland (E) of Kyonggi province, Korea. A total of 362 samples collected during the period from April 1999 to December 2000 were examined.
Out of them, 26 (7.2%) dermatophytes were isolatied: 11 isolates of Trichophyton( T.) terrestre, 5 of Microsporum( M.) gypseum, 4 of M. canis, 2 of M. nanum, 2 of T. mentagrophytes, one of T. rubrum and one of T. ajelloi. Twenty-five (8.9%) dermatophytes were isolated from mammals and only one (1.2%) T. mentagrophytes was isolated from birds. Six dermatophytes were isolated from 24 animals with the suspected lesions of dermatophytosis: 1 of T. terrestre in Racoon Dog, 4 of M. canis in Japanese Macque and Pungsan Gea, 1 of T. mentagrophytes in Guinea pig. The dermatophytosis by T. terrestre, M. canis and T. mentagrophytes was first found from Racoon Dog, Japanese Macqueand Guinea pig in Korea, repectively.
Thirteen out of 26 dermatophytes were isolated from Carnivores, and 9 out of the 13 dermatophytes were T. terrestre. T. terrestre was the most prevalent in Carnivores.
Thirty-nine genera were collected during this investigation and the most common genera were Cladosporium (48.1%), Aspergillus (47.2%), Penicillium (37.3%), Alternaria (32.6%), Fonsecaea (24.0%), Scopulariopsis (20.4%) and Chrysosporium (20.2%).
